I became attracted to mixed media work to try to bring together elements from my Indian heritage into modern mediums and themes. Batik is an ancient art form used extensively across asia and africa to decorate textiles. In the batik process, wax is used as a resist on the cloth, which is dyed in different hues. I have brought this batik process to paper, not using wax, but using other materials to get the same resist effect. I plan out the major elements of design, but the batik process gives the beautiful and unexpected details in the work.
